You know that feeling when you buy something small — like a domain name — and suddenly your entire weekend disappears into a vortex of “just one more configuration.” That was me with alekseyruk.com.

What makes this even funnier is that I’d been thinking about getting my own domain for years. Every time I’d get close, I’d talk myself out of it. “Too big of a project.” “Not enough time.” “Maybe later.” Life was busy, work was busy, and the idea of running my own little corner of the internet felt like a commitment I couldn’t quite take on.

Then retirement happened. Suddenly, “later” became “right now.”
So I finally did it. I bought the domain. And honestly? It turned out to be the best $15 I’ve ever spent.

The moment the purchase went through, I felt like I’d just unlocked a new level in a video game. DNS? Mine. Subdomains? Mine. The power to break everything with a single typo? Also mine.

And then the fun began.

I spun up Cloudflare like a proud wizard summoning protective shields. I routed traffic through tunnels like I was building a secret underground metro system. I wired up IIS bindings, origin certificates, and even got email flowing from my own domain — which felt suspiciously like becoming a real adult.

Then came the experiments. Could I host multiple internal services behind clean subdomains? Yes. Could I make reCAPTCHA behave? No, but that’s a saga for another post. Could I turn my home lab into a mini‑internet? Absolutely.
Buying a domain wasn’t just a purchase. It was a portal. A playground. A spark that turned into a whole ecosystem of projects I didn’t even know I wanted to build.

And the best part? Now that I’m retired, I finally have the time to enjoy every minute of it.
And honestly — I’m just getting started.

Haha, thank you, Antonio! I’m not sure I’m fully in your territory yet, but I’m definitely exploring. If I break something, I’ll know who to call!
